Cambridge International Primary Programme

The Primary Programme is structured through curriculum frameworks and organised into six stages. The curriculum frameworks reflect the teaching targets for each year group and provide comprehensive learning objectives for Math, Science and English.

Other subjects offered during this Phase follow general guidelines from the British National Curriculum but are adapted to the needs of students and also organised into frameworks to mirror the standard of the CIPP. The learning objectives provide a structure for teaching and learning and a reference against which learners’ ability and understanding can be benchmarked. They allow progress to be mapped and facilitate identification of strengths and weaknesses in specific strands within the subject which can then be addressed during the learning journey.

Specialist Subjects

To meet the challenges of the future, children need to develop proficiency with both conversational and academic English.Cambridge Primary English enables learners to communicate confidently and effectively and to develop the critical skills to respond to a range of information, media and texts with understanding and enjoyment. Learners will develop a first language competency in English based on a curriculum designed to be successful in any culture and to promote cross-cultural understanding.
English as Second Language
This curriculum develops learners’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. It has been developed in conjunction with Cambridge English Language Assessment and is based on the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), used across the world to map learners’ progress in English.
The curriculum for English aims to ensure that all students:

  • read easily, fluently and with good understanding
  • develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • write clearly, accurately and coherently adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
  • use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
  • are competent in the areas of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and use the spoken language to persuade

Objectives are set in the following areas:

• Usage
Phonics, spelling and vocabulary
Grammar and punctuation

• Reading
Fiction and Poetry
Non-fiction

• Writing
Fiction
Non-fiction

• Speaking and Listening

Learning about working together in teams, taking individual responsibilities, being reflective and evaluative is equally important for us as learning how to calculate numbers, apply new skills and techniques to do problem solving and analytical reasoning.

The Cambridge Primary mathematics curriculum is beautifully designed into 5 content areas. They are Number, Geometry, Measure, Data Handling and Problem solving. Problem solving is an integral part of all the other 4 content areas.

Aims:

At Al Salam Private School we aim to help all children reach their full potential in Maths by:

  • Encouraging the learners to develop skills and techniques in numbers and measures.
  • Developing confidence to apply mathematical learning to a range of real life situations.
  • Providing activities to understand and implement the most effective strategies in problem solving.
  • Developing the mental strategies in the Number strand and the ability to think in an abstract way.
  • Enhancing their non – verbal reasoning by working on patterns, symmetry, position of shapes in space and angles.

The Cambridge Primary Mathematics curriculum framework provides a solid foundation upon which the later stages of education can be built.

The Latin word scīre, meaning “to know” or “to understand,” gives us the root sci. Words from the Latin scīre is connected with the ideas of knowing or understanding. Science is the understanding of the world and how everything in it works. A person’s conscience is the knowledge of right and wrong and the feeling that he or she should do right.

The Cambridge International Primary Programme curriculum framework for Science covers four content areas: Scientific Enquiry, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Scientific enquiry is about considering ideas, evaluating evidence, planning investigative work and recording and analysing data.

The four strands and substrands are:

Scientific enquiry
• Ideas and evidence
• Plan investigative work
• Obtain and present evidence
• Consider evidence and approach

Biology
• Plants
• Living things in their environment (from stage 2)
• Humans and animals

Chemistry
• Material properties
• Material changes (from stage 2)
• States of matter (from stage 4)

Physics
• Forces (forces and motion from stage 3)
• Light and dark (from stage 2)
• Electricity (from stage 2, Electricity and magnetism from stage 4)
• The Earth and beyond (from stage 2)
• Sound

The Scientific enquiry objectives underpin Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which are focused on developing confidence and interest in scientific knowledge. Environmental awareness and some history of science are also incorporated. The Cambridge Primary Science curriculum framework provides a solid foundation upon which the later stages of education can be built.

The Humanities Curriculum in Al Salam Private School includes History, Geography and Social Studies. Students gain a comprehensive knowledge of the different subjects and are able to put them into context and deepen their understanding of the country as well as the world they live in.

History

In History, students learn about significant figures, events and developments. Their impact and role in constituting other communities in the region over different eras and in different places.

Geography

The students acquire knowledge of the earth, its properties and how such properties are related to human interactions.

Social Studies (National Education)

Social Studies emphasizes in teaching students the sense of belonging and loyalty to his/her country and society and adherence to his/her values and ethics. Students also learn the basis, different forms and duties of the government and the rules of society members. They will gain knowledge of economic principles and systems, how markets operate and the role of the government in the development of the national and global economy.
